Southland born and bred Andreas journey in the dairy industry started in 2014.
“I have been working on the family dairy farm which was converted from Sheep to dairy. This was where it all began and my passion for working with cows grew.”
Andreas knowledge has been built from actively working on the families dairy farm aswell as qualifications gained through:
Primary ITO – Animal Health and Husbandry
DHI (Dairy Hoof Care Institute) – Certificate Lameness Management
SIT Certificate in Organic Primary Production
Open Polytechnic – Certificate in Apiculture
Otago Polytechnic (Current) – Rural Animal Technician
Dr Elaine “The Soil Food Web School” (Current) – Regenerative Agriculture Consultancy
The commercial dairy farming practices influenced Andreas decision to start educating herself into more sustainable, environmentally friendly and ethical ways of farming. Drinking milk directly from the cows, but creating a business where others can access a quality food product, seeing and knowing exactly where their food is coming from.
All food has a story of where is comes from – and knowing what you eat is part of that, so know what you eat and know its GOOD
People are becoming more aware now of where their food comes from and also of how large scale commercial farming affects the environment.
At How Good Milk, we are working towards being a carbon zero, certified organic, regenerative micro dairy farm – where incorporating livestock is good for the environment and land – not detrimental.
We choose cows that do exceptionally well on a diet of grass alone. Out cows are on pasture from early spring through to early winter where they have a mixture of pasture and on farm produced grass supplements.
We believe that first and foremost, a cow produces milk to feel her calf. We keep cows and calves together, the calf drinking whenever and however much it needs until natural weaning time the HOW GOOD ladies produce far more milk than one or even two claves could drink, so we milk once a day, sharing milk with the calf. Caring for the cows is out priority, we consider it a partnership here on our farm, and we believe this is one of the many reasons out dairy products to be a better choice for you and your family.
